Divemaster internship work plan for Hong Kong

A Divemaster internship work plan turns an ambitious professional goal into a sequence of evidence, practice and supervised duties. Start with certification, logged-diving and medical checks. Then agree a route, weekly task blocks, feedback records and clear boundaries. This guide provides a completed six-gate planning tool and a handover worksheet. It does not replace current agency standards, instructor assessment, medical advice or written placement terms.

A useful fact to keep in mind

Decision tool: this article uses six work-plan gates, from intake and readiness through operations, leadership practice and close-out.

What should a Divemaster internship work plan deliver?

How is this Divemaster internship work plan different from a course page?

Treat an internship as a supervised work-and-learning arrangement. Treat a course as a formal assessment pathway. They can overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

A Divemaster internship Hong Kong enquiry should identify duties, learning outcomes, supervisors, dates and commercial terms. A Divemaster course Hong Kong enquiry should identify agency standards, assessments and certification steps.

The useful output is a signed-off plan. It should show what you will observe, assist, practise and review. It should also show what you cannot do yet.

Use the first table as a planning brief. Replace the example timing with the operator’s actual schedule. Keep each gate open until the responsible instructor confirms it.

  • Separate certification requirements from optional internship duties.
  • Assign one supervisor for every practical activity.
  • Record evidence instead of relying on a dive count alone.
  • Set a review point after each training block.
  • Write cancellation, attendance and payment terms before travel.

Which entry gates should you check before an internship?

What should your logbook and health file prove?

Begin with identity and documents. List your age, agency cards, first-aid records, recent dives and contact details. Add the dates of each document.

PADI’s published Divemaster guidance lists Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver credentials. It also lists current CPR and first-aid training, forty logged dives and medical clearance within twelve months.

The PADI route is explained in PADI Divemaster internship requirements. Use that page as a discussion point. Confirm the current standard with the instructor before booking.

A different agency may set different entry gates. The NAUI Open Water to Divemaster pathway is progression advice, not a substitute for current NAUI standards.

Medical clearance is personal. DAN explains that fitness includes physical and medical fitness. Ask a qualified physician about your circumstances. Do not use this article as clearance.

  • Separate required credentials from recommended specialties.
  • Bring a readable logbook with recent conditions and lessons learned.
  • Check first-aid and CPR expiry dates before the placement starts.
  • Ask which medical form and physician signature the agency accepts.
  • Record any accommodation request before practical work begins.

How should you choose a PADI or NAUI internship route?

Why should agency choice follow the work you want to practise?

Choose the route that matches your intended training environment and future recognition needs. Compare standards, instructor availability, assessment evidence and local operating practice.

The PADI Divemaster course Hong Kong page can frame a PADI enquiry. The same route is also described as PADI Divemaster training Hong Kong. Ask whether the placement includes the full course or supplements it.

NAUI describes Divemaster as a leadership rating for experienced divers. It focuses on organising enjoyable open-water dives for certified divers. Review NAUI Divemaster Hong Kong before discussing local delivery.

A NAUI Divemaster course Hong Kong conversation should confirm current prerequisites and the issuing agency. Do not assume that one agency’s card automatically replaces another agency’s assessment.

Use a decision gate before paying. Continue only when the supervisor names the agency, course standard, assessment method and evidence required.

  • Name the agency that will issue the final rating.
  • Ask which prior certifications are accepted as equivalents.
  • Confirm who owns the academic materials and assessment records.
  • Check whether practical days are course days, internship days or both.
  • Ask how cross-agency experience will be reviewed.

What should a supervised Divemaster day include?

How can daily tasks build professional judgement?

A useful day starts before the water entry. Read the site plan, check conditions and confirm participant needs. Then prepare equipment with a senior diver.

The Divemaster internship daily tasks article covers preparation, briefings, assistance, post-dive care and structured learning. Use it to build a local task list. Do not treat every task as an automatic leadership permission.

During a briefing, practise clear sequence and calm language. State the route, depth limits, signals, buddy plan and exit procedure. Invite questions before equipment enters the water.

During a dive, observe the group rather than chasing a personal performance goal. Notice spacing, air use, comfort and changing conditions. Report concerns early.

After the dive, secure equipment and record what changed. A short debrief should identify one strength, one risk and one practice target. This turns activity into evidence.

  • Review weather, site, boat and participant information.
  • Check cylinders, exposure protection and accessories with a supervisor.
  • Observe briefings before delivering a small approved part.
  • Log questions, decisions and feedback after each activity.
  • Stop and escalate when conditions exceed your agreed scope.
Guide · 05

How should you record supervision and feedback?

What evidence makes an internship reviewable?

A placement becomes reviewable when each duty has an observer, a date and a result. A dive number alone cannot show communication, preparation or judgement.

Ask the supervisor to initial a short record after every meaningful task. Record the setting, your role, the decision made and the next practice target. Keep student information anonymous.

Use the second table during a weekly review. It is a completed illustrative worksheet, not a claim about a specific DiveHarbour placement. Adapt the wording to your agency and local operation.

Feedback should be specific. “Improve leadership” is too broad. “Brief the lost-buddy response before the next certified-diver activity” gives you an observable target.

Set a weekly review even when weather cancels diving. Study, equipment care, mapping and debrief work can continue. Practical water tasks still need suitable conditions and supervision.

  • Name the activity and the candidate’s exact role.
  • Record the supervising professional and observation level.
  • Write one demonstrated strength and one open gap.
  • Attach relevant plan, briefing or debrief notes.
  • Protect participant privacy in every record.

What should you confirm before accepting the placement?

How do you turn the work plan into a safe written enquiry?

Send one concise brief before you discuss dates. State your current certifications, logged dives, first-aid status and preferred agency. Add your intended professional role.

Ask whether the arrangement is a course, internship, or combined plan. Request the supervisor’s name, weekly hours, water days, non-diving duties and assessment records. Ask what happens when weather changes the schedule.

Ask about payment and expenses in plain language. Confirm course fees, equipment, boat access, materials, certification processing, transport and any unpaid duties. The supplied approved-price list has no Divemaster reference amount. Request a current written quote instead of inventing a figure.

Read cancellation and attendance terms before arranging leave or travel. Fees are non-refundable unless written terms say otherwise. Make-up work depends on those terms and instructor availability.

Finish with a decision checkpoint. Enquire when the plan is clear. Pause when the scope, supervisor, safety boundary or agency outcome remains vague.

A strong work plan supports a realistic conversation. It does not promise employment, payment, a fixed placement or automatic progression to instructor training. Those outcomes require separate confirmation.

  • Attach certificates, logbook summary and first-aid evidence.
  • Ask for the exact agency standard and rating outcome.
  • Confirm duties that are supervised, observed or prohibited.
  • Request written terms for money, absence and weather changes.
  • Keep a copy of the final brief and every agreed revision.

Questions to ask

Common questions

Is a Divemaster internship the same as a Divemaster course?

No. A course follows an agency standard and assessment pathway. An internship adds supervised operational exposure. Ask whether your arrangement includes certification, practical work, or both.

How many logged dives does PADI publish for Divemaster training?

PADI’s current published guidance says forty logged dives to start training and sixty to earn certification. Confirm the current standard and your logbook with the instructor.

Can I choose NAUI or PADI based only on the brand name?

No. Compare the agency standard, instructor, assessment, supervision and future plans. NAUI and PADI are separate pathways, so confirm how prior credentials are reviewed.

What should I do if weather cancels an internship day?

Follow the written attendance and rescheduling terms. Ask whether study, equipment care or debrief work can continue. Do not assume a replacement date or refund.

Does completing Divemaster guarantee instructor work?

No. A Divemaster rating can support further professional development. Employment, paid guiding and instructor progression depend on separate standards, competence and operator decisions.
