Advanced diver route planner for Hong Kong

An advanced diver route planner turns a broad training idea into a documented choice. Start with your current certification, recent practice, goals, schedule and comfort. Then compare the PADI, SSI and NAUI route evidence, not just course names. Use the two worksheets below to set decision gates, identify missing information and send DiveHarbour a clear handover brief. The result is a safer enquiry, not an automatic qualification or depth permission.

How should an advanced diver route planner create a decision gate?

Use the advanced diver route planner as a decision record

A route planner should produce a decision, not a longer course description. Record your current certification, recent dives, preferred agency and practical goal. Add the evidence still missing before you contact a training centre. This approach keeps the enquiry specific. It also prevents a familiar course name from hiding different prerequisites or training outcomes.

Use three gates for every option. Gate one checks entry eligibility and current capability. Gate two checks whether the course activities match your goal. Gate three checks dates, supervision, equipment and total inclusions. Stop at any gate that remains unclear. Ask the instructor for a written answer before paying or arranging transport.

The worksheet below is deliberately operational. It is not a ranking of agencies. It helps you compare like with like, while leaving the final suitability decision with a qualified instructor. Agency standards, local delivery and conditions can change the practical plan. Treat each row as a question to verify.

  • Name the certification you already hold.
  • Record your last comparable dive and equipment setup.
  • Define one practical goal for the next course.
  • List dates, location and supervision constraints.
  • Mark every unconfirmed item before booking.

What should you record before comparing advanced agencies?

Which facts should the route planner capture first?

Start with your certification card and logbook. Note the agency, level, issue date and any junior or equivalent status. Add the number of recent dives, their environments and your last use of unfamiliar equipment. A course may accept an equivalent entry-level certificate. The instructor still needs to judge whether your present ability suits the plan.

Write one sentence about your intended diving. You might want deeper recreational planning, navigation confidence, night experience or a bridge toward a specialty. You might simply want structured practice after a long break. A vague goal makes elective choices harder. A specific goal makes the route conversation more useful.

Include health and comfort information without diagnosing yourself. Mention relevant changes, medication questions, ear concerns or anxiety to the instructor. Complete the agency forms honestly. A physician may need to assess some answers. General route information cannot provide personal medical clearance or replace professional advice.

  • Certification agency, level and equivalent status.
  • Recent dive dates, sites, depths and conditions.
  • Equipment that feels familiar or unfamiliar.
  • One priority goal and two optional interests.
  • Health or comfort questions to raise privately.

How does the PADI route fit a five-dive planning brief?

Use required dives and electives as separate decisions

Start by reading the Advanced Open Water Diver course Hong Kong information for the local course scope. The same destination also describes the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Hong Kong route. These links point to one local course page. Read the current details there, then ask what the instructor can confirm for your dates.

PADI describes five Adventure Dives in its programme. Deep and Underwater Navigation are required. Three further dives are selected with the instructor. Use the five-dive Advanced Open Water course Hong Kong wording as a planning prompt. It should not be treated as permission for every site or depth.

A five-dive route can work when you want a compact skills sampler. It can also expose a planning gap. An elective may introduce photography, night, buoyancy or another activity. One introductory dive does not automatically complete a specialty. Ask what credit, equipment and follow-up training apply to each choice.

PADI states a 30-metre/100-foot depth qualification for its Advanced Open Water Diver certification. That figure is not a personal clearance. The instructor, local conditions, equipment and demonstrated skills still control a responsible plan. Keep the deep activity inside the course standard and your actual readiness.

  • Confirm the two required Adventure Dives.
  • Choose electives for a real future use.
  • Ask which equipment each elective needs.
  • Separate course credit from specialty certification.
  • Treat depth as training scope, not a guarantee.

How should you compare NAUI and SSI route structures?

Compare the required activities before comparing the labels

The NAUI Advanced Open Water course Hong Kong page is a local starting point for a NAUI route. NAUI describes six dives. Three include night or limited visibility, navigation and deep diving. It also requires an Open Water certification or equivalent. The instructor may use an evaluation dive when capability needs checking.

For SSI, review the SSI Advanced Open Water Diver Hong Kong page. Also check the SSI Advanced Open Water course Hong Kong route. SSI describes five specialty areas with one open-water training dive per area. Deep and Navigation are included with three additional choices. It lists Open Water Diver certification as a prerequisite.

These structures are not interchangeable scorecards. PADI uses five Adventure Dives. SSI uses five specialty-area dives. NAUI describes six dives with named required activities. Course titles may sound similar while training records, recognition and local scheduling differ. Ask the centre to explain the exact completion record you will receive.

Compare the route against your goal and recent experience. A diver seeking navigation practice may prioritise a route with clear compass work. A diver returning after inactivity may need a screening or refresher first. A diver considering night or deep work needs suitable equipment, conditions and supervision. Do not choose from the logo alone.

  • Record each agency's required activities.
  • Check equivalent-certification acceptance in writing.
  • Ask whether an evaluation dive is needed.
  • Compare records, recognition and follow-up options.
  • Keep local delivery separate from agency standards.

When should advanced diver training Hong Kong move into a specialty?

Match the next route to a capability gap

Use the advanced diver training Hong Kong page after you define the capability gap. It frames deeper, specialty and skills-focused choices as different next steps. That distinction matters. An advanced sampler can introduce an activity. A specialty route can require more focused knowledge and practical work.

Choose a depth-focused direction when depth planning is your real need. Choose navigation when you want better orientation and route control. Choose night training when low-light communication and equipment are relevant. Choose buoyancy work when trim and control limit every other activity. The best route solves the problem you actually meet underwater.

Do not use this planner to self-authorise a demanding dive. A certification card does not remove environmental limits. Current, visibility, entry, exit, gas planning and buddy support still matter. In Hong Kong, the operator may change a site or sequence after checking conditions. Accept a safer change when the plan no longer fits.

A specialty choice should also consider what happens next. Ask whether the advanced activity credits toward later training. Ask what extra dives, equipment or logged experience remain. Ask whether the local instructor recommends a skills session first. This creates a route with continuity instead of a collection of unrelated cards.

  • Name the capability gap in plain language.
  • Choose one primary specialty direction.
  • Check prerequisites before selecting equipment.
  • Ask what later training the activity supports.
  • Accept a site or date change when needed.

How do you turn the route planner into a booking handover?

Send a compact brief instead of a vague advanced-course enquiry

Your handover can fit in one message. State your agency and certification level first. Add your last three relevant dives and the equipment you used. Name one goal, two possible dates and your preferred area. Then ask which route, prerequisite check and session sequence the instructor recommends.

Ask for the current scope before paying. Confirm training dives, sites, supervision, equipment, boat or venue arrangements and certification processing. Request the total price and exclusions in writing. Dates and availability should be confirmed directly. A planning worksheet is useful only when the live arrangement matches it.

Keep a contingency line in the brief. Write what can move, what cannot move and who makes the final weather decision. Ask about illness, missed sessions and incomplete skills. Fees are non-refundable unless written booking terms state otherwise. Make-up sessions require those written terms and are not automatic.

Message DiveHarbour on WhatsApp at https://wa.me/85294976438 with the completed brief. Include your certification, recent dives, goal and preferred dates. A qualified instructor can then discuss fit and next steps. This conversation does not replace medical clearance, an agency standard or an on-site safety decision.

  • Certification and equivalent status.
  • Recent dives and equipment familiarity.
  • One priority goal and preferred agency.
  • Dates, location and flexibility.
  • Questions about scope, cost and written terms.
A sensible next step

Take the question with you

A good advanced diver route planner ends with a clear next action. Compare agency structures, record your evidence and set decision gates around capability, purpose and delivery. Then send DiveHarbour a concise handover brief. Keep the final route subject to instructor assessment, current conditions, written terms and any required medical advice.

Questions to ask

Common questions

Do I need many dives before an Advanced Open Water route?

It depends on the agency, certification and instructor assessment. PADI describes Open Water certification as its prerequisite. SSI lists Open Water Diver certification. NAUI requires Open Water or an equivalent and may evaluate capability. Ask the local instructor to confirm your readiness.

Are PADI, SSI and NAUI advanced courses equivalent?

They share continuing-education aims, but their published structures differ. PADI describes five Adventure Dives. SSI describes five specialty-area dives. NAUI describes six dives with named required activities. Compare the actual completion record, prerequisites and local delivery.

Does Advanced Open Water automatically allow deeper diving?

No. A course or certification depth statement does not override conditions, equipment, supervision or demonstrated ability. Ask the instructor about the applicable limit and plan each dive within your training and current readiness.

What should I ask before booking advanced diver training?

Ask about prerequisites, screening, required activities, electives, dates, locations, supervision, equipment, boat or venue costs, certification processing and weather terms. Request the current scope and price in writing before payment.

Can I choose a specialty immediately after Open Water?

Possibly, but suitability depends on the agency, specialty, age, certification, experience and instructor assessment. A sampler or refresher may be a better first step. Ask which route fits your goal and remaining skills.
